The Best Recumbent Bikes for Short Riders

A recumbent bike is sized by the distance between the seat and the pedals. If that distance will not close far enough, nothing else about the machine matters — so this page ranks on the one number that sets it.

By Stephen V.Last updated How we choose

How this is funded: we earn a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes what we recommend, and every page here names at least one thing we would not buy. Full disclosure.

On an upright bike, a short rider drops the saddle. On a recumbent there is no saddle to drop, because the machine is not sized by height at all. It is sized by the distance between the seat and the pedals, and that distance has a shortest setting the seat rail simply will not go past.

If that shortest setting is still further away than your leg is long, you get one of two workarounds and both are bad. Either you point your toes to keep contact with the pedal at the far end of every revolution, or you slide your hips forward off the back rest to make up the difference — which removes the back support that is the entire reason to buy a recumbent instead of an upright.

The specification that governs this is usually printed as an inseam range or a seat-travel range: the band of leg lengths the seat position can accommodate. For a short rider only the bottom of that band matters, in exactly the way that only the bottom of the resistance range matters to a bike bought for a bad knee. The top of the range is somebody else’s problem.

Of the seven machines below, five publish an inseam range, one publishes a rider height range instead, and one publishes nothing about leg length at all. The lowest published minimum on this site is 26.5 in; the highest minimum is 29.9 in. That 3.4-inch spread decides who can use which machine, and it is not correlated with price, brand or anything else you can see in a photograph.

They are ranked below by how close the seat will come, lowest first, and the last entry is one we would not buy at any leg length. We have not ridden any of these machines — here is exactly what we did instead.

Quick picks

Ranked on the published accessibility measurements and on who each machine actually suits. Select a row to jump to the full write-up. The last column is the number of the nine measurements the manufacturer will not publish — we have not used any of these machines, and here is exactly what we did instead.

The only bike here that publishes both a noise figure and a genuinely one-handed seat adjustment — you slide the seat with one hand from the seated position instead of bending down to a pull-pin. For a shared household or a weak grip, that combination is hard to beat.

What it gets right

  • One-hand sliding seat rail, published — no bending down and no two-handed pull-pin
  • 450 lb capacity, joint-highest in this shortlist
  • Publishes a noise figure (<15 dB), which nobody else here does
  • Published inseam 26.5–38.9 in reaches the shortest riders of any bike we list

What to know first

  • The <15 dB claim is unverified by any standard we can check — treat it as a claim, not a measurement
  • Step-over height and seat height are both unpublished
  • Assembly weight and box weight are not published anywhere we could find

A flip-away side lever clears the way when you get on, and at 63.8 lb assembled it is the lightest full-size bike here — which matters if it has to move between rooms. A published inseam minimum of 27.2 in, second only to the HARISON, suits a shorter rider.

What it gets right

  • Flip-able side handle gets out of the way for entry and exit, published
  • Published inseam minimum of 27.2 in — the second lowest of any bike we list, behind the HARISON
  • 63.8 lb assembled: the lightest full-size bike on this page, so relocating it is realistic
  • 16 resistance levels on a belt drive, plus two 20 lb bands for seated upper-body work

What to know first

  • 300 lb capacity, below the 400–450 lb machines here
  • Sunny publishes a 'step height' range for this model without defining what it measures, so we are not going to tell you what it means
  • Resistance bands need a pulley setup that some buyers will simply never use

Not a bike. The pedals travel in a straight line rather than a circle, which removes the knee-flexion arc that makes a circular pedal stroke uncomfortable for some arthritic knees — and Teeter publishes an electronic step lock specifically for getting on and off. Also the most expensive machine on the site.

What it gets right

  • Linear stepping motion rather than a circular pedal stroke — a genuinely different joint path, not a marketing distinction
  • Electronic Step Lock holds the pedals still while you get on and off, published as an accessibility feature
  • Publishes resistance in pounds (0–105 lb across 20 levels), not just level numbers
  • 9 in color LCD, the largest display anywhere on this site; published rider range 4 ft 11 in to 6 ft 6 in

What to know first

  • The most expensive machine here by a wide margin
  • 32.7 in wide and 59 in long — the largest footprint of any seated machine on this page
  • Step-over height, seat height and box weight still unpublished
  • The physical-therapy licensing claim is about the stride patent, not evidence that it will help your specific condition

380 lb capacity and a continuously-sliding seat for roughly the price of the cheapest step-through frames. If your budget stops around $200 but your weight or leg length rules out the entry-level machines, this is the one that still fits.

What it gets right

  • 380 lb capacity at the bottom of the price range
  • Continuous seat slider, published inseam 29–37 in
  • 16 resistance levels using ten magnets, against 8 on most machines at this price
  • Stated 70% pre-assembled with a claimed one-hour setup

What to know first

  • The published dimensions read 20 long × 45 wide, which is almost certainly transposed — we are reporting exactly what the listing says

450 lb capacity with a continuously-sliding seat rail rather than pre-drilled holes, so leg length lands where it should instead of one notch short. The published 29–40 in leg-length range is the longest here.

What it gets right

  • 450 lb capacity on a commercial-grade steel frame, published
  • Infinite slider seat: adjusts continuously, not in notches — published 29–40 in leg length
  • 3.4 in seat cushion thickness is published, which is unusual and useful
  • Arrives 90% pre-assembled per the listing

The only bike in this shortlist whose maker publishes an actual seat height — 20.9 to 22.4 inches, which is about dining-chair height, so you sit down onto it rather than lowering yourself into it. That one published number is why it leads.

What it gets right

  • Sunny publishes a real seat height range (20.9–22.4 in) — nobody else in this shortlist does
  • Published inseam range of 29.9–38.6 in is the widest seat travel here
  • Moving handlebars work with or independently of the pedals, so an arm-only session is possible on a bad-knee day
  • Pulse sensors sit on the stationary handlebars, within reach from the seated position

What to know first

  • 265 lb weight capacity is the lowest of any bike here — a hard stop for a lot of buyers

The listing describes a fully adjustable seat and an 8-level tension knob, and then stops. No published weight capacity, no seat height, no inseam range, and two contradictory sets of dimensions. We would spend the same money elsewhere.

Why we would skip it

We would skip this one. Not because it is a bad machine — we have no idea, and neither does anyone else who hasn't ridden it — but because Marcy publishes almost nothing about it. No weight capacity, no seat height, no inseam range, no step-over height, and the Amazon listing's two dimension fields contradict each other. For the same money the VANSWE RB661 publishes a capacity and a seat range. When a manufacturer won't tell you what a machine will hold, that is your answer.

What it gets right

  • Foam-covered handlebars and transport wheels are both published
  • LCD tracks speed, distance, time and calories

What to know first

  • No published weight capacity anywhere we could find — the single most-searched spec in this category
  • The Amazon listing's dimension field says 56 × 25 × 39 in while its own title says 11 × 22 × 31 in
  • Marcy's site has no live product page for this model that we could reach
  • Eight of the nine accessibility measurements are unpublished

What we found looking for these numbers

We went looking for 70 measurements across the 7machines on this page — the nine that decide whether an older adult can get on, reach the controls, read the screen and hear themselves think. 37 of those 70 are not published by anybody. Not one manufacturer here publishes the full set.

Step-over height is the worst of them. It is the single measurement that decides whether you can get onto a machine at all, and across everything we checked, not one manufacturer states it. That is not an oversight in a category explicitly marketed to seniors, and the count in each panel above is there so you can see who is doing it.

Where a figure exists, we cite it and date it. Where it doesn’t, the panel says Not published by the manufacturer rather than an estimate dressed up as a fact. You can measure step-over height yourself in about a minute — and if a machine is already in your house, that is the fastest way to settle it.

Measure your own inseam before you read the table

Your inseam here means the length of your leg from the floor to your crotch, and it is not the number on the label of your pants — trouser inseams are cut to a finished hem, which is a shorter measurement and varies by brand. You need the anatomical one, and it takes about a minute.

Take your shoes off and stand with your back against a wall, feet three or four inches apart. Put a hardback book between your legs, spine upward, and pull it up firmly until it stops — firmly, because a book resting lightly will read an inch short. Have somebody mark the wall along the top edge of the spine, then measure from the floor to the mark. That is your inseam.

Now compare it with the published minimum. If your inseam is below a machine’s minimum, the seat physically cannot come close enough and no adjustment will rescue it. If your inseam sits within an inch or so of the minimum, the bike fits, but it fits at the very end of its travel — which means no room to fine-tune, and no room at all for a second, taller person in the household to share it.

One thing this measurement does not tell you: whether the seat back will sit where your spine wants it. Seat-back position is fixed relative to the seat on every machine here, so it travels with you. But how you then set the seat is a separate skill, and the guide to setting a recumbent seat correctly is worth reading before the box arrives rather than after.

What each machine actually publishes

Five published inseam ranges, in order of how low they start:

  • HARISON HR-B51A — 26.5 in to 38.9 in. The lowest published minimum anywhere on this site, and the listing adds a stated rider range of 4 ft 8 in to 6 ft 4 in. It also has the one-hand sliding rail, which matters more than it sounds: a short rider sharing a bike with a tall one moves the seat every single session.
  • Sunny Health & Fitness SF-RB424006 — 27.2 in to 35.8 in. Seven tenths of an inch behind the HARISON at the bottom, and over three inches short of it at the top, which tells you who this bike is designed around. At 63.8 lb assembled it is also the lightest full-size machine here.
  • VANSWE RB661 — 29 in to 37 in, on a continuous slider rather than pre-drilled holes. Two and a half inches higher at the bottom than the HARISON, which is the difference between fitting and not fitting for a lot of people.
  • VANSWE RB405 — 29 in to 40 in of leg length, with a stated rider range of 5 ft 1 in to 6 ft 4 in. The same 29 in floor as the RB661 with the highest top end published anywhere here, so it is the machine for a household where the taller rider is the harder one to fit.
  • Sunny SF-RB420032 — 29.9 in to 38.6 in. The highest minimum of anything we list. This is the bike we rank first on the general seniors shortlist, because it is the only machine whose maker publishes a real seat height — and it is close to last here, on the same evidence, because the seat starts almost three and a half inches further from the pedals than the HARISON’s does. A specification that makes a machine right for one constraint can make it wrong for another.

Then the two that do not give you an inseam. The Teeter FreeStep publishes a rider height range of 4 ft 11 in to 6 ft 6 in and no leg length, which is why it sits third rather than being ranked against a number it does not have. And the Marcy NS-716R publishes nothing at all: no inseam, no seat height, no weight capacity. It is on this page as the skip, and the reason is the absence itself.

A rider height range is not an inseam range

Manufacturers publish both, sometimes on the same listing, and they are not interchangeable. Leg-to-torso proportion varies enough between people that two adults of identical height can differ by a couple of inches of inseam, and it is the inseam the seat rail has to satisfy. A height range is a summary of who the maker thinks the machine suits; an inseam range is a statement about the hardware.

So where a machine gives you both — the HARISON and the VANSWE RB405 do — use the inseam and treat the height range as a sanity check. Where it gives you only a height, as the Teeter does, you are trusting the manufacturer’s judgment rather than checking a measurement, and you should keep the receipt.

Watch for the range with no bottom to it, too. Several bikes in this category state a maximum rider height and stop, which reads like a fit specification and is not one: it tells a tall buyer something and a short buyer nothing. We flag it in the panel as published-but-incomplete rather than treating it as an answer, and the same convention applies across the budget shortlist, where it is most common.

Getting off the bike is the other half of the problem

Reaching the pedals is the fit question everyone asks about. The one that catches people out is the seat height — how far your feet have to travel down to the floor when you want to stand up, and whether they reach it flat while you are still sitting.

Exactly one machine on this site publishes that number. Sunny states the SF-RB420032 seat at 20.9 in minimum and 22.4 in maximum, which is roughly dining-chair height. Everybody else declines to publish it, including all six other machines here, and step-over height — the height of the frame rail you cross to get in — is not published by a single manufacturer we have checked in this entire category.

That is an awkward gap for a short buyer specifically, because a seat that is comfortable to sit down onto for someone of average height can be a seat you lower yourself into and then push yourself up out of. If you can get to a machine in person, or one is already in the house, you can measure step-over height yourself in about a minute and the same tape settles the seat height while you are there.

Two features here help without being published as a measurement. The SF-RB424006 has a side handle that flips out of the way for getting on and off, and the Teeter has an electronic step lock that holds the pedals still while you mount and dismount — both stated by their makers as accessibility features rather than inferred by us from a photograph.

Why the fit matters more than the bike

A seat set too far away does not just feel awkward. You end up pedaling with your toes and a nearly straight knee at the far point of each revolution, and the ankle takes over work the leg should be doing. The Arthritis Foundation’s point about cycling is that the continuous motion carries a joint through its range, and a stroke you are stretching to complete is not the full range — it is a shortened one performed at the end of your reach.

It also quietly decides whether the machine gets used. The CDC’s target for adults 65 and over is at least 150 minutes a week of moderate activity, and nobody accumulates 150 minutes a week on a bike that is slightly uncomfortable in a way they cannot name. The fit problem does not announce itself; the bike just stops getting ridden.

So buy the fit first and the features second, which is the reverse of how these machines are marketed. If you want the longer version of that argument, the full buying guide works through the rest of the specification sheet in the same order.

If nothing here comes close enough

Below roughly a 26-inch inseam you are outside every published minimum on this site, and buying a machine and hoping is an expensive way to find out. There is a better answer than a smaller bike.

A pedal exerciser is a set of pedals on a weighted base that you use from a chair you already own, and because you position the chair, the seat-to-pedal distance is whatever you decide it is. The fit question disappears entirely. It is a smaller training effect than a full bike and we are clear about that, but it is a real one, and it costs a fraction of anything on this page.

The other honest option is to buy where returning is genuinely easy and measure the machine on your own floor. If you are within an inch of a published minimum, that is not a spec-sheet decision any more — it is a try-it decision, and the only wrong move is to assume it will be fine because the listing mentions seniors.

Questions people ask

What is the best recumbent bike for a short person?

On published specifications, the HARISON HR-B51A. Its seat rail states a 26.5 in minimum inseam, the lowest figure published by any machine we list, and the listing adds a stated rider range starting at 4 ft 8 in. The Sunny Health & Fitness SF-RB424006 is next at 27.2 in and is the lightest full-size bike here, which matters if it has to move between rooms. We have not ridden either; those are the numbers their makers publish.

How do I measure my inseam for an exercise bike?

Shoes off, back against a wall, feet three or four inches apart. Put a hardback book between your legs with the spine upward and pull it up firmly until it stops, mark the wall at the top edge of the spine, and measure from the floor to the mark. That is your anatomical inseam, and it is usually a different number from the inseam printed on your pants, which is measured to a finished hem.

Can someone under 5 feet tall use a recumbent bike?

It depends on your inseam rather than your height, and you have to check the specific machine. Two of the bikes here state minimums that reach below 5 feet — the HARISON at 4 ft 8 in and the Teeter FreeStep at 4 ft 11 in — while others start at 5 ft 1 in or publish no minimum at all. Measure your inseam, compare it with the published minimum, and if you are within an inch of it, buy somewhere with an easy return.

What happens if the seat will not come close enough?

You compensate, and both compensations undo the machine. Either you point your toes to hold the pedal at the far end of each revolution, which hands work to the ankle that the leg should be doing, or you slide your hips forward off the back rest — which removes the lumbar support that is the reason to buy a recumbent rather than an upright bike. Neither is a setting you can adjust your way out of.

Is a rider height range the same thing as an inseam range?

No, and the difference matters. Leg-to-torso proportion varies enough that two people of the same height can differ by a couple of inches of leg length, and it is the leg length the seat rail has to satisfy. Where a manufacturer publishes both, use the inseam figure and treat the height range as a sanity check. Where only a height range exists, you are trusting a judgment rather than checking a measurement.

Why is the bike you rank first elsewhere near the bottom of this page?

Because the constraint changed. The Sunny SF-RB420032 leads our general seniors shortlist because it is the only machine whose maker publishes a real seat height — 20.9 to 22.4 in, about dining-chair height — which decides whether you can stand back up unaided. On this page it ranks near the bottom because its seat rail starts at a 29.9 in inseam, the furthest out of anything we list. Same published specs, different question.

Does a short rider need a shorter bike overall?

Not necessarily, and footprint is a separate decision from fit. The published footprints on this page run from 50 inches long to 63.8 inches, and the shortest machine is not the one whose seat comes closest to the pedals. What every one of them does need is roughly two feet of clearance on the side you get on from, which is the dimension people forget when they measure an alcove.
