The Best Exercise Equipment for Seniors

Nine products across four categories, with the published accessibility measurements side by side. The one we'd tell almost everybody to buy first costs $37.

By Stephen V.Last updated How we choose

How this is funded: we earn a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes what we recommend, and every page here names at least one thing we would not buy. Full disclosure.

This is the whole site on one page: the best pick from each of the four equipment categories we cover, plus the runners-up worth knowing about, plus one product we recommend against.

It is deliberately not ordered by price or by how impressive the machine is. It is ordered by what we would tell someone to buy first if they were starting from nothing, which is a $37 foam pad, and which is not the answer anybody selling fitness equipment wants to give.

Here is why. The CDC’s guidance for adults 65 and over asks for three things: at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity, two days of muscle strengthening, and activities to improve balance. The National Institute on Aging lists the same four types. Cardio equipment addresses one of them. A $37 pad addresses the one that is actually keeping people out of hospital.

Quick picks

Ranked on the published accessibility measurements and on who each machine actually suits. Select a row to jump to the full write-up. The last column is the number of the nine measurements the manufacturer will not publish — we have not used any of these machines, and here is exactly what we did instead.

StrongTek Extra Wide TPE Balance Pad

At 19 by 15.8 inches it is the only pad here with room for two feet side by side and still some margin. That margin is the difference between a balance exercise and a stumble off the edge, and it is the reason to pay a few dollars more than the standard size.

What it gets right

  • 19 in × 15.8 in — genuinely wide enough for a two-foot stance with margin
  • 2.4 in thick, so it gives a real balance challenge without being tall enough to roll an ankle
  • High-density TPE that is described as holding its shape rather than compressing flat
  • Textured non-slip top and a water-resistant foam body

What to know first

  • No published weight capacity
  • No firmness figure of any kind — 'high-density' is a description, not a specification
  • Costs roughly half again as much as a standard-size pad

The only bike in this shortlist whose maker publishes an actual seat height — 20.9 to 22.4 inches, which is about dining-chair height, so you sit down onto it rather than lowering yourself into it. That one published number is why it leads.

What it gets right

  • Sunny publishes a real seat height range (20.9–22.4 in) — nobody else in this shortlist does
  • Published inseam range of 29.9–38.6 in is the widest seat travel here
  • Moving handlebars work with or independently of the pedals, so an arm-only session is possible on a bad-knee day
  • Pulse sensors sit on the stationary handlebars, within reach from the seated position

What to know first

  • 265 lb weight capacity is the lowest of any bike here — a hard stop for a lot of buyers
  • 8 resistance levels, against 16 on several cheaper machines
  • Step-over height still isn't published, so the getting-on question is only half answered

3.Best for walking

Sunny Health & Fitness Treadmill with Extended Safety Handrails, Low Deck(SF-T722062)

Four inches from the floor to the deck, published as a number rather than described as 'low'. That is the measurement that decides whether stepping on feels like a step or like a climb, and this is the only treadmill here that states it.

What it gets right

  • Floor-to-deck height published as 4 in — the one measurement that matters most here, and the only machine stating it
  • Extended handrails alongside the deck, not just a front bar
  • 18.9 in deck width published; wider than the walking pads here by 3–5 in
  • Console explicitly designed with bigger, easier-to-press buttons

What to know first

  • The most expensive walking machine on the site, several times the price of a walking pad
  • 8.5 mph top speed is far more machine than a walking program needs
  • 62.6 × 30.5 in footprint, and no published folded dimension
  • Weight capacity is not published anywhere we could find — unusual and annoying at this price

4.Best if space is tight

DeskCycle DeskCycle 2 Under Desk Bike(DSK-SPO-DESKCYCLE-2GRY)

The only pedal exerciser here that publishes its pedal height as an adjustable range — 9 to 10 inches — and states the desk height it clears, 27 inches. That is the number that decides whether your knees hit the desk, and everyone else leaves you to guess it.

What it gets right

  • Publishes an adjustable 9–10 in height and states it clears desks from 27 in — the only unit here doing either
  • Publishes resistance in pounds: 8 settings up to 39 lb
  • High-inertia flywheel spins 14 times per pedal stroke, so the motion is even rather than jerky
  • Detachable LCD, so it can sit where you can actually read it

What to know first

  • Two to three times the price of a basic pedal exerciser
  • No published weight capacity
  • Not motorized — you have to be able to turn the pedals yourself
  • Strap-in pedals need bending down to fit your feet

450 lb capacity with a continuously-sliding seat rail rather than pre-drilled holes, so leg length lands where it should instead of one notch short. The published 29–40 in leg-length range is the longest here.

What it gets right

  • 450 lb capacity on a commercial-grade steel frame, published
  • Infinite slider seat: adjusts continuously, not in notches — published 29–40 in leg length
  • 3.4 in seat cushion thickness is published, which is unusual and useful
  • Arrives 90% pre-assembled per the listing

6.Best controls

Redliro Treadmill for Seniors with Long Handrails(CS1271-D)

Handrails that run the full length of the deck with the speed buttons mounted on the rails, so you change pace without letting go. It also starts at 0.5 mph, which is genuinely slow — slower than most people's shuffling pace, which is exactly the point.

What it gets right

  • Speed controls on the handrails themselves — you never take a hand off to adjust
  • 0.5 mph minimum speed published; slow enough for a genuine warm-up or recovery pace
  • Full-length handrails spanning the deck, published as the design point
  • 0–2% incline with a true 0% setting, published

What to know first

  • 22.6 in total width means a narrow belt — no published belt width at all
  • 300 lb capacity is fine but not generous
  • Only a 12-month warranty
  • Display is described as large numbers with no character height given

Motorized, and that is the whole point: a 60 W motor moves your legs through the stride so you do not need the strength to start the motion yourself. For someone recovering strength or sitting for long stretches, that is a different product category from a pedal exerciser, not a fancier version of one.

What it gets right

  • Motorized — 12 automatic programs will move your legs for you, which self-powered pedals cannot
  • Forward and reverse motion, published
  • Remote control as well as a touch screen, so no bending to change settings
  • The smallest published footprint of any seated unit here at 15.6 in × 14.9 in

8.First progression

Amazon Basics Wood Wobble Balance Trainer Board(IR97339-BK)

A rigid wooden board that tilts on a fixed dome — a real step up in difficulty from any foam pad, and the only balance product here that publishes a weight capacity (265 lb). Its own listing warns it must not be used on a smooth or wet floor, which rules out a lot of kitchens.

What it gets right

  • Publishes a weight capacity — 265 lb — which no pad or cushion here does
  • Solid wood top with a non-slip surface, published at 15.75 in square
  • Rigid platform gives a clear, predictable tilt rather than a squishy one
  • One-year limited warranty

What to know first

  • 3.15 in tall and tilting — a significant step up in difficulty. This is not a first purchase for someone with a fall history
  • The listing explicitly warns against use on wet or smooth surfaces
  • 265 lb capacity is the lowest published figure on the site
  • No published tilt angle, which is what actually sets the difficulty

9.We would skip this one

ELDGREON Balance Board with Spring System

A birch board on springs with a published 350 lb capacity — the highest here. It also sits 6 inches off the floor and moves unpredictably, which makes it a progression tool for the already-steady, not a starting point.

Why we would skip it

Skip this one for a senior beginner. It is well made — birch multiplex, a published 350 lb capacity, 6.39 lb — but it stands 6 inches off the floor on springs that oscillate under you. Six inches is roughly a stair riser, and a spring-loaded platform is deliberately unpredictable. That combination is the opposite of what someone with a fall history needs. If you are already steady and want progression, it is a reasonable buy; if balance is the reason you are shopping, start on a 2 inch foam pad instead.

What it gets right

  • Publishes a 350 lb weight capacity — the highest of any balance product here
  • Birch multiplex construction with a published 6.39 lb board weight
  • Spring oscillation trains reaction rather than static hold
  • Published dimensions 18.8 in × 14.9 in × 6 in

What to know first

  • 6 in tall — about a stair riser. A fall off this is a fall from height
  • Springs make the platform move unpredictably, which is the point and also the risk
  • No published spring rate, so the difficulty cannot be compared to anything

ELDGREON does not publish 1 of 6 of these. Where that is the case, this panel says so rather than guessing. How we compile these

We have not used this machine. Everything above comes from the manufacturer’s published documentation and the dated retailer listing, with the source given for each figure. Where they don’t publish a number, we say so. We can’t tell you how it feels to ride, how quiet it really is, or how it holds up after two years — and anyone who tells you otherwise without owning one is guessing.

What we found looking for these numbers

We went looking for 72 measurements across the 9machines on this page — the nine that decide whether an older adult can get on, reach the controls, read the screen and hear themselves think. 24 of those 72 are not published by anybody. 1 of these machines publishes the full set.

Step-over height is the worst of them. It is the single measurement that decides whether you can get onto a machine at all, and across everything we checked, not one manufacturer states it. That is not an oversight in a category explicitly marketed to seniors, and the count in each panel above is there so you can see who is doing it.

Where a figure exists, we cite it and date it. Where it doesn’t, the panel says Not published by the manufacturer rather than an estimate dressed up as a fact. You can measure step-over height yourself in about a minute — and if a machine is already in your house, that is the fastest way to settle it.

What to buy first, second and third

If you are starting from nothing, in this order:

  1. A foam balance pad, about $37.Put it beside whichever kitchen counter you already stand at. Two minutes twice a day. The CDC reports more than one in four adults 65 and over falls each year, and that falling once doubles the chance of falling again — balance work is the thing that addresses that directly, and no bike does.
  2. Walking shoes and the outdoors, free. The CDC names brisk walking as moderate-intensity activity. If you can walk outside safely, do that before buying a machine to walk on indoors.
  3. Then cardio equipment, if you still want it.Once you know you will use it, which is the only thing that decides whether a machine was worth buying. A recumbent bike if you have room and can get on and off; a pedal unit if you don’t.

The most common expensive mistake in this category is doing that list backwards — buying the biggest machine first, using it for three weeks, and never getting round to the $37 thing that would have helped most.

The four categories, and who each one is for

Balance equipment — $19 to $250

For anyone who has had a fall or a near-fall, or who has started using the wall on stairs. Cheapest category on the site and probably the highest-value. The full section is here, including the honest note that equipment does nothing about vision, blood pressure, medication or loose rugs.

Recumbent bikes — $160 to $1,350

For anyone who wants real aerobic exercise indoors with their back supported and without weight going through knees or hips. The category where accessibility numbers vary most: published capacities from 265 lb to 450 lb, and one bike whose maker publishes an actual seat height. The full section is here.

Treadmills and walking pads — $240 to $800

For people who want to walk and can’t reliably do it outdoors. The deciding question is whether you need something to hold, and the answer changes which half of the category you should be shopping in. The full section is here.

Seated and compact cardio — $50 to $170

For when a full machine is too much money, too much room, or too much mounting. Less exercise than a bike and far more likely to be used daily. The full section is here.

What the published numbers actually say across the whole site

Some patterns are only visible when you compile every specification across every category, which is what this site does. Four findings:

Nobody publishes step-over height. Not one manufacturer, on any machine, at any price. It is the measurement that decides whether an older buyer can get on at all, and the entire industry declines to state it. So we wrote a guide on measuring it yourself.

Price does not buy documentation. The bike with the best-documented seat height costs about a third of the most expensive bike here. The most expensive treadmill on the site publishes no weight capacity at all. The priciest seated elliptical publishes no resistance range.

The useful specifications are the unglamorous ones. A 4-inch floor-to-deck height. Speed buttons on the handrail. A one-handed seat rail. A 99 lb minimum user weight. Pedal height stated as an adjustable range. Every one of those changes whether someone can use the machine, and every one is buried under app features in the marketing.

Weight capacity is where cheap beats expensive. Two mid-priced bikes publish 450 lb. The Schwinn publishes 330 lb and the Horizon 300 lb. If capacity is your constraint, the premium brands are the wrong aisle.

What we are not recommending, and why

One product on this page is marked as a skip: a 6-inch spring-mounted balance board. It is genuinely well made, publishes the highest weight capacity of any balance product here, and is a reasonable purchase for someone already steady. For a senior beginner it is 6 inches off the floor on a platform that moves unpredictably, which is the wrong combination for anyone with a fall history.

More broadly, there are several categories we have deliberately not built pages for yet, because we could not verify enough about them to be useful: rowing machines, arm ergometers, vibration plates, and the premium recumbents that are not reliably sold online. We would rather have four sections we can source properly than eight we cannot.

And the premium bikes that appear on every competing roundup — Sole, Life Fitness, Matrix, NuStep — are absent because there is no live retail listing we can link. Several are excellent machines. A dedicated fitness dealer is where you see them, and we would rather tell you that in prose than build a buy button that does not work.

How to know whether you bought the right thing

Six weeks after it arrives, ask one question: are you using it?

That is the only metric that separates good equipment from expensive furniture, and it correlates much more strongly with where the thing lives and how easy it is to start than with any specification on this page. A pad by the counter gets used. A bike in the spare room with the door shut does not. A pedal unit in front of the television gets used more than a treadmill upstairs.

If you are not using it, the fix is usually location rather than a different purchase. Move it to the room you actually sit in. If the fix is that you cannot get onto it comfortably, that is a return — and if that is because a manufacturer’s unpublished measurements meant you could not check first, we are sorry, and that is exactly the problem this site exists to reduce.

General information, not medical advice. Tread & Tone is written by an enthusiast, not a clinician. Nobody here is a doctor, a physical therapist or a trainer, and nothing on this site has been medically reviewed. Talk to your doctor or physical therapist before starting something new, particularly after surgery, a fall, or a change in medication.

Questions people ask

What is the single best piece of exercise equipment for a senior?

A foam balance pad at around $37, if we can only name one. The CDC and the National Institute on Aging both list balance work as something older adults specifically need, and the CDC reports more than one in four adults over 65 falls each year. It costs a fiftieth of a bike, needs no assembly, power or floor space, and it addresses the thing most likely to actually put someone in hospital.

Is a recumbent bike or a treadmill better for seniors?

A bike if joints or balance are the constraint, a treadmill if you want weight-bearing exercise and can walk safely. A bike is seated, so no weight goes through knees or hips and there is nothing to fall off. Walking loads the skeleton, which is good for bone, and it is the more functional movement. Our comparison page works through the fork properly.

How much should I expect to spend?

Balance equipment $19 to $37. A seated pedal unit $50 to $170. A recumbent bike $160 to $900 with the useful accessibility features clustering around $300 to $500. A walking machine $240 to $800. Note that on almost every page here the top pick is not the most expensive option, and on two of them it is among the cheapest.

What should I avoid buying?

Anything whose maker will not publish a weight capacity — one bike on this site publishes none, which is why we tell you to skip it. Balance equipment more than about 3 inches off the floor if you have a fall history. And any machine whose lowest resistance setting is still too much for you, which usually means avoiding eight-level bikes if a knee is the reason you are shopping.

How much exercise do I actually need?

The CDC's guidance for adults 65 and over is at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity, two days of muscle strengthening, and activities to improve balance. That is 22 minutes a day of the aerobic part. It is a destination rather than a starting point — ten minutes, three times in the first week, and building from there is how people actually get there.

Do I need to talk to a doctor before starting?

The National Institute on Aging recommends talking with your doctor before beginning a new exercise program, and that is worth doing — particularly after surgery, after a fall, with a heart or lung condition, or following a change in medication. Nobody on this site is qualified to advise you, and a five-minute conversation with someone who is will tell you more about your situation than any page here.

Which category has the best-documented products?

Balance equipment, ironically, because the products are simple enough that the dimensions are the whole specification. Every pad and board here publishes its thickness and standing surface. Bikes are the worst documented relative to what matters: not one publishes a step-over height, most publish no seat height, and only one publishes noise as a figure.
