The Best Exercise Bikes for Bad Knees

The lowest resistance setting matters far more than the highest, and the smoothness of the pedal stroke matters more than either. Here's what each machine publishes about both.

A bad knee changes what you should be looking at on a spec sheet, and it inverts one thing completely: the top of the resistance range becomes irrelevant and the bottom becomes the whole decision.

You are not going to be riding at level 14. You are going to be riding somewhere between level one and level two, which means what matters is whether the machine can express something between them. An eight-level bike cannot. A bike with 0–100 electronic control can barely tell the difference between adjacent settings, which is exactly the point.

The second thing is smoothness. A heavier flywheel carries the pedal through the dead spot at the top and bottom of each revolution instead of lurching, and lurching is what a sensitive knee notices. Published flywheel weights on this site range from 11 lb to 15.4 lb, and only three machines publish one at all.

Everything here is a seated machine with a back rest, so the knee is moving a load rather than also stabilizing your body weight over it. That is the baseline. These six are ranked on how finely you can dial the load down.

Note that Horizon's own page and its Amazon listing disagree about the weight capacity.

The pedals travel in a straight line rather than a circle, which removes the knee-flexion arc that makes a circular pedal stroke uncomfortable for some arthritic knees — and Teeter publishes an electronic step lock specifically for getting on and off. Also the most expensive machine on the site.

A 7-inch display and 25 resistance levels from a brand with a real parts channel, and Schwinn publishes the numbers a buyer normally has to guess at — 330 lb capacity, 107.6 lb assembled, exact assembled dimensions. It is also the most expensive bike here by a wide margin, and it still won't tell you the step-over height.

The only bike here that publishes both a noise figure and a genuinely one-handed seat adjustment — you slide the seat with one hand from the seated position instead of bending down to a pull-pin. For a shared household or a weak grip, that combination is hard to beat.

The listing describes a fully adjustable seat and an 8-level tension knob, and then stops. No published weight capacity, no seat height, no inseam range, and two contradictory sets of dimensions. We would spend the same money elsewhere.

Why we would skip it

We would skip this one. Not because it is a bad machine — we have no idea, and neither does anyone else who hasn't ridden it — but because Marcy publishes almost nothing about it. No weight capacity, no seat height, no inseam range, no step-over height, and the Amazon listing's two dimension fields contradict each other. For the same money the VANSWE RB661 publishes a capacity and a seat range. When a manufacturer won't tell you what a machine will hold, that is your answer.

What we found looking for these numbers

We went looking for 60 measurements across the 6machines on this page — the nine that decide whether an older adult can get on, reach the controls, read the screen and hear themselves think. 33 of those 60 are not published by anybody. Not one manufacturer here publishes the full set.

Step-over height is the worst of them. It is the single measurement that decides whether you can get onto a machine at all, and across everything we checked, not one manufacturer states it. That is not an oversight in a category explicitly marketed to seniors, and the count in each panel above is there so you can see who is doing it.

Where a figure exists, we cite it and date it. Where it doesn’t, the panel says Not published by the manufacturer rather than an estimate dressed up as a fact. You can measure step-over height yourself in about a minute — and if a machine is already in your house, that is the fastest way to settle it.

Resistance, published as a real number

Most machines publish a level count and nothing else, which is close to meaningless: eight levels on one bike and eight on another may span entirely different ranges. Two machines here do better.

The Horizon 5.0Rpublishes 0–100 electronically controlled resistance. A hundred steps means the increment between adjacent settings is small enough that you can find the exact load a knee will tolerate rather than choosing between too little and too much. This is the single most relevant published specification on this page.

The Teeter FreeSteppublishes its 20 levels as a range in pounds: 0 to 105 lb. That is a genuinely useful number because it is absolute rather than relative — you know what level 1 actually is.

Everyone else publishes a count. The Schwinn’s 25 magnetic levels are the best of those, because more levels across a similar range means smaller steps. Sixteen levels, as on the HARISON and Niceday, is the middle. Eight levels on a mechanical knob is coarse for this purpose, and it is what most budget bikes have.

Seat position is the setting that hurts or helps

This is more important than anything you buy. At the far point of the pedal stroke your knee should keep a slight bend. If the seat is too far back you straighten and over-extend on every single revolution — hundreds of times a session — and a knee that was fine at minute two will not be at minute fifteen. Too close and you close the joint angle up and load the front of the knee instead.

So look for a continuously adjustable seat rail rather than fixed positions. The HARISON publishes a one-hand sliding rail with a 26.5 to 38.9 inch range. The Niceday, by contrast, has eight fixed positions — which means your correct seat distance has to fall near one of eight holes, and if it falls between two you get to choose which way to be slightly wrong.

Set it, then ride two minutes and check again. Nearly everyone sets it too far back the first time.

Volume, and the honest version of building up

The CDC’s target for adults 65 and over is at least 150 minutes a week of moderate activity. With a bad knee, that is a destination measured in months rather than weeks, and the fastest route to it is a slower start than feels reasonable.

Ten minutes at the lowest resistance, three times in the first week. If the knee is no worse the next morning — the next morning is the test, not during the ride — add five minutes. The Arthritis Foundation’s guidance on building volume is worth reading alongside this, and the pattern it describes is the same: increase one variable at a time and never duration and resistance together.

When a bike is the wrong answer

If the lowest setting on a bike is still too much, more bike is not the answer. Two honest alternatives:

Is a recumbent bike good for bad knees?

Generally yes, for a mechanical reason: seated, your body weight is on the seat rather than on the joint, so the knee moves a load instead of also stabilizing you. The Arthritis Foundation notes that cycling's continuous motion moves a joint through its range, which produces the fluid that lubricates it. But the setting matters more than the machine — a seat positioned too far back over-extends the knee on every revolution and will make a good bike feel like a bad one.

How many resistance levels do I need?

Fewer than you think, spaced more finely than most bikes manage. You will ride near the bottom of the range, so what matters is the gap between level one and level two rather than how high the numbers go. The Horizon's 0–100 electronic control is the best answer to that on this page; 25 levels on the Schwinn is the next best; eight levels on a knob is coarse for this purpose.

Does flywheel weight matter for a sore knee?

Yes, more than it does for a healthy one. A heavier flywheel carries momentum through the dead spots of each revolution, so the pedal stroke is even rather than lurching — and it is the lurch that a sensitive knee notices, particularly at low resistance where there is little load to smooth things out. Published weights here run 11 lb to 15.4 lb, and only three machines publish one.

Should I ride through knee pain?

No, and nobody on this site is qualified to tell you otherwise. Mild stiffness that eases as you warm up is different from pain that increases as you ride, and the test that matters is how the knee feels the next morning rather than during. If it is worse, stop and talk to your doctor or physical therapist. Exercise equipment is not a treatment plan.

Is the Teeter's linear motion really better for knees?

It is genuinely a different joint path — the pedals travel in a straight line rather than a circle, which Teeter publishes as reducing stress on hips, knees and ankles compared with a cycle motion. That is a published geometric claim and the geometry is real. Whether it helps your knee is a different question, and we have not used it, so we cannot tell you it feels better. If a circular stroke already feels fine, spend the money on finer resistance instead.

How do I set the seat correctly?

Sit down, put your heel on the pedal at the furthest point of the stroke, and slide the seat until your leg is almost straight with the knee still slightly bent — never locked. Then move your foot to its normal position on the pedal and you will have a comfortable bend throughout. Ride two minutes and check again; nearly everyone sets it too far back on the first attempt.
