The Best Recumbent Bikes for Knee Replacement Recovery

Our pick is the VANSWE RB405, because the specification that decides this is seat travel — and it is the only bike here publishing a 29 to 40 inch leg-length range on a slider with no notches to land between.

By Stephen V.Last updated How we choose

How this is funded: we earn a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes what we recommend, and every page here names at least one thing we would not buy. Full disclosure.

The pick is the VANSWE RB405, and it wins on one specification: a seat that slides continuously through a published 29 to 40 inch leg-length range rather than clicking into pre-drilled holes. That is the longest published travel of any bike on this site, and the mechanism matters more than the number. A new knee has a flexion limit set by the surgeon, and on a recumbent bike the deepest bend in the whole rotation happens at the top of the stroke, where seat distance decides it. A slider lets you put the seat at the exact distance that keeps your knee inside that limit. A bike with eight fixed holes makes you choose between one notch too deep and one notch too straight. It is for somebody in the first few months after surgery who has been given a range to respect and wants to respect it precisely.

Before anything else, the part that is not ours to decide. A knee replacement comes with instructions, and the equipment question sits inside them. MedlinePlus puts the bike in exactly the right place in its discharge instructions: “Ask your surgeon or physical therapist about using a stationary bicycle and swimming as extra exercises to build your muscles and bones.” Extra — alongside the exercises the therapist gave you, not instead of them. The same page is blunt about load: “Your surgeon or physical therapist will tell you when you can start putting weight on your leg and how much weight is OK.” Nobody here is a clinician, nothing on this site is medically reviewed, and we are not going to tell you when to start.

What we can tell you is which published numbers change for this buyer, because they are not the numbers the rest of this category argues about. Resistance granularity is the axis on our bad-knees shortlist, and it is the right axis for an arthritic knee that hurts under load. A replaced knee is a different problem in the early months: the stiffness and the range limit come first, and the resistance is going to be set at the bottom regardless. So this page ranks on how precisely the seat can be positioned, whether you can move it without getting off, whether the pedal waits upright for a leg that cannot fish for it, and how little of the operated leg has to lift to get on.

One count worth carrying into the list. Of the six bikes here, three publish a continuous seat slider with a stated leg-length range, one publishes a seat height in inches, and one publishes nothing at all — no capacity, no inseam, no seat height. That last one is the entry we tell you to skip, and the reason is the same reason this page exists: when the whole decision rests on a measurement, a manufacturer who will not state it has answered for you.

450 lb capacity with a continuously-sliding seat rail rather than pre-drilled holes, so leg length lands where it should instead of one notch short. The published 29–40 in leg-length range is the longest here.

What it gets right

  • 450 lb capacity on a commercial-grade steel frame, published
  • Infinite slider seat: adjusts continuously, not in notches — published 29–40 in leg length
  • 3.4 in seat cushion thickness is published, which is unusual and useful
  • Arrives 80% pre-assembled per the listing

What to know first

  • Only 8 resistance levels and an 11 lb flywheel — the lightest flywheel here
  • Step-over height, seat height and box weight are all unpublished
  • 'Whisper-quiet' is a marketing phrase, not a decibel figure

We have not used this machine. Everything above comes from the manufacturer’s published documentation and the dated retailer listing, with the source given for each figure. Where they don’t publish a number, we say so. We can’t tell you how it feels to ride, how quiet it really is, or how it holds up after two years — and anyone who tells you otherwise without owning one is guessing.

2.Adjust it from the seat

HARISON Recumbent Exercise Bike, 450 lb capacity(Ben-HR-B51A)

The only bike here with a genuinely one-handed seat adjustment — you slide the seat with one hand from the seated position instead of bending down to a pull-pin — on a 450 lb frame with the lowest published inseam minimum we have found. For a shared household or a weak grip, that combination is hard to beat.

What it gets right

  • One-hand sliding seat rail, published — no bending down and no two-handed pull-pin
  • 450 lb capacity, joint-highest in this shortlist
  • Front transport wheels and a lifting handle are published, so moving it has been thought about
  • Published inseam 26.5–38.9 in reaches the shortest riders of any bike we list

What to know first

  • Its listing used to claim under 15 dB; the current one gives no decibel figure at all, so noise is unpublished like everyone else's
  • Step-over height and seat height are both unpublished
  • Assembly weight and box weight are not published anywhere we could find

The only bike in this shortlist whose maker publishes an actual seat height — 20.9 to 22.4 inches, which is about dining-chair height, so you sit down onto it rather than lowering yourself into it. That one published number is why it leads.

What it gets right

  • Sunny publishes a real seat height range (20.9–22.4 in) — nobody else in this shortlist does
  • Published inseam range of 29.9–38.6 in is the widest seat travel here
  • Moving handlebars work with or independently of the pedals, so an arm-only session is possible on a bad-knee day
  • Pulse sensors sit on the stationary handlebars, within reach from the seated position

What to know first

  • 265 lb weight capacity is the lowest of any bike here — a hard stop for a lot of buyers
  • 8 resistance levels, against 16 on several cheaper machines
  • Step-over height still isn't published, so the getting-on question is only half answered

A flip-away side lever clears the way when you get on, and at 63.8 lb assembled it is the lightest full-size bike here — which matters if it has to move between rooms. A published inseam minimum of 27.2 in, second only to the HARISON, suits a shorter rider.

What it gets right

  • Flip-able side handle gets out of the way for entry and exit, published
  • Published inseam minimum of 27.2 in — the second lowest of any bike we list, behind the HARISON
  • 63.8 lb assembled: the lightest full-size bike on this page, so relocating it is realistic
  • 16 resistance levels on a belt drive, plus two 20 lb bands for seated upper-body work

What to know first

  • 300 lb capacity, below the 400–450 lb machines here
  • Sunny publishes a 'step height' range for this model without defining what it measures, so we are not going to tell you what it means
  • Resistance bands need a pulley setup that some buyers will simply never use

380 lb capacity and a continuously-sliding seat for roughly the price of the cheapest step-through frames. If your budget stops around $200 but your weight or leg length rules out the entry-level machines, this is the one that still fits.

What it gets right

  • 380 lb capacity at the bottom of the price range
  • Continuous seat slider, published inseam 29–37 in
  • 16 resistance levels using ten magnets, against 8 on most machines at this price
  • Stated 70% pre-assembled with a claimed one-hour setup

The listing describes a fully adjustable seat and an 8-level tension knob, and then stops. No published weight capacity, no seat height, no inseam range, and two contradictory sets of dimensions. We would spend the same money elsewhere.

Why we would skip it

We would skip this one. Not because it is a bad machine — we have no idea, and neither does anyone else who hasn't ridden it — but because Marcy publishes almost nothing about it. No weight capacity, no seat height, no inseam range, no step-over height, and the Amazon listing's two dimension fields contradict each other. For the same money the VANSWE RB661 publishes a capacity and a seat range. When a manufacturer won't tell you what a machine will hold, that is your answer.

What it gets right

  • Foam-covered handlebars and transport wheels are both published
  • LCD tracks speed, distance, time and calories

We have not used this machine. Everything above comes from the manufacturer’s published documentation and the dated retailer listing, with the source given for each figure. Where they don’t publish a number, we say so. We can’t tell you how it feels to ride, how quiet it really is, or how it holds up after two years — and anyone who tells you otherwise without owning one is guessing.

What we found looking for these numbers

We went looking for 60 measurements across the 6machines on this page — the nine that decide whether an older adult can get on, reach the controls, read the screen and hear themselves think. 33 of those 60 are not published by anybody. Not one manufacturer here publishes the full set.

Step-over height is the worst of them. It is the single measurement that decides whether you can get onto a machine at all, and across everything we checked, not one manufacturer states it. That is not an oversight in a category explicitly marketed to seniors, and the count in each panel above is there so you can see who is doing it.

Where a figure exists, we cite it and date it. Where it doesn’t, the panel says Not published by the manufacturer rather than an estimate dressed up as a fact. You can measure step-over height yourself in about a minute — and if a machine is already in your house, that is the fastest way to settle it.

Why seat distance is the specification, not resistance

Picture the pedal stroke from the side. At the far point of the rotation your leg is almost straight. At the near point — the top of the stroke — the knee is at its most bent, and that is the moment a new knee either tolerates the machine or does not. How bent it gets is not a property of the bike. It is the distance from the seat to the pedal.

Which means the useful question about a recumbent bike, for this reader, is how finely can I set that distance. There are two mechanisms in this category and they are not equivalent:

  • A continuous slider. The seat carriage runs on a rail and locks anywhere along it. You can move it an inch. The VANSWE RB405 publishes 29–40 in of leg length on one, the VANSWE RB661 publishes 29–37 in, and the Sunny SF-RB420032 publishes 29.9–38.6 in. The HARISON publishes 26.5–38.9 in and slides with one hand.
  • Fixed positions.A pull-pin drops into one of a set of holes. The Niceday RC88 is a good bike with eight of them, and we would not buy it for this reader in the first three months for exactly that reason — your knee’s tolerance does not have to coincide with a drilled hole, and in our experience of reading these listings, nobody publishes the spacing between them.

There is a second reason the slider wins here, and it is the one people discover in week three. Range of motion after a knee replacement changes. The distance that was right in the first fortnight is too far back by the second month. A slider follows that; a hole pattern makes you jump.

Our seat-position guide walks the whole setup sequence, and it is worth reading before the first session rather than after the first sore evening.

Can you adjust it without getting off?

This sounds like a convenience question and it is not. Most seat adjusters on recumbent bikes assume you will stand up, bend down to the frame, pull a pin and slide the carriage. In the months after a knee replacement, bending down to the floor beside a machine is the single most awkward movement in the room, and squatting to reach a pin is often specifically on the list of things not to do yet.

Two machines here publish a mechanism that avoids it. The HARISON HR-B51Apublishes a one-hand sliding seat rail you work from the seated position — no bending, no pin. The Marcy NS-1201R, which is not on this list but sits one page over on our budget shortlist, publishes a quick-release lock its listing says can be set while you are still sitting on it.

Everybody else is a stand-up-and-bend-down job. That is survivable — you will set it two or three times in the first week and then rarely — but it is worth knowing before the box arrives, and it is worth having somebody else in the house for the first setup.

The pedal, and the leg that cannot chase it

A stiff, swollen leg in the first weeks does not place itself neatly. Getting the foot onto a pedal that is hanging upside down, with the other leg bearing the weight and nothing to grab, is a genuinely risky thirty seconds that almost no product listing addresses.

Two published features solve it. Counterbalanced or self-levelling pedals are weighted so the platform rotates to face up and stays there until a foot lands on it. The Sunny SF-RB424006 publishes self-levelling pedals with adjustable straps; the Marcy NS-1201R publishes counterbalanced pedals with straps. Pedal straps then stop a foot drifting off mid-stroke, which matters because an operated leg often cannot feel when it is sliding.

And there is one machine that solves the whole transfer in a different way. The Teeter FreeStep publishes an electronic Step Lock that holds the pedals motionless while you get on and off. It is the most expensive machine on this site and the largest seated footprint we list, so it is not on this shortlist — but if the transfer is the part that frightens you, the cross-trainer shortlist is where to read about it.

Getting on: the step-through frame is doing the real work

It is easy to overlook, because every bike on this page has it. A recumbent frame is open in the middle — you walk through the gap and sit down, rather than lifting a leg over a crossbar. For a knee that has just been replaced, lifting that leg sideways and over something is precisely the movement you have been told to avoid, and this entire category removes it. That is the honest reason a recumbent is the home machine most often recommended for this recovery, more than anything about the pedal stroke.

What none of them publishes is the step-over height — how high the lowest part of that gap sits off the floor. Not one bike on this site states it. Our step-over height guide shows how to measure it on a delivered machine in about a minute, and it is the first thing we would check before the return window closes.

The one bike that gives you a related number is the Sunny SF-RB420032, which publishes a seat height of 20.9 to 22.4 inches — roughly dining-chair height. That is a real advantage here: you want to sit down onto a seat, which your good leg can manage, rather than lower yourself into a low one, which loads the operated knee through a bend you may not be cleared for yet. Its 265 lb capacity is the lowest of any bike we list, which is the trade.

What we would not buy for this

The Marcy NS-716R is last and we would not buy it for this reader at any price. Marcy publishes no weight capacity, no seat height and no inseam range for it, and the Amazon listing’s own dimension fields contradict its title. On a page where the entire decision is a measurement, a machine with no published measurements is not a cheaper option — it is a different product category.

We would also be wary of anything in this aisle marketed with the word “rehab” and no published figure behind it. Rehabilitation language is cheap to print. A published leg-length range is not, which is why only three machines here have one.

And one piece of advice that costs nothing. MedlinePlus’s discharge page includes a line people miss because it sounds minor: “Try not to sit for more than 45 minutes at a time.” A bike that lives in the room you sit in gets used in the gaps. A bike in the garage does not. Our small-spaces shortlist ranks these machines on published footprint if the room is the binding constraint.

General information, not medical advice. Tread & Tone is written by an enthusiast, not a clinician. Nobody here is a doctor, a physical therapist or a trainer, and nothing on this site has been medically reviewed. Talk to your doctor or physical therapist before starting something new, particularly after surgery, a fall, or a change in medication.

Questions people ask

Is a recumbent bike good after a knee replacement?

It is one of the most commonly used pieces of home equipment for it, and MedlinePlus's own knee-replacement discharge instructions name it directly: 'Ask your surgeon or physical therapist about using a stationary bicycle and swimming as extra exercises to build your muscles and bones.' Note the framing — extra, and ask first. The practical case for the recumbent version specifically is that the frame is step-through, so you never lift the operated leg over a crossbar, and your weight is in the seat rather than through the joint.

When can I start using an exercise bike after knee surgery?

That is a question for your surgeon or physical therapist and the answer varies by patient and by procedure. MedlinePlus states it plainly: 'Your surgeon or physical therapist will tell you when you can start putting weight on your leg and how much weight is OK.' What we can tell you is what to ask about, so the answer is usable: whether seated cycling is allowed yet, whether there is a knee-flexion limit to stay inside, and how many minutes to start with.

What seat position should I use after a knee replacement?

Further back than feels natural, at first. The deepest knee bend in the rotation happens at the top of the stroke, and seat distance is what sets it — so moving the seat back reduces how far the knee has to bend. Start at the furthest setting that still lets your foot reach the pedal through the whole rotation without your hips rocking, then come forward gradually as range improves. If you have been given a flexion limit, that limit is the thing the seat position has to respect, and it is worth asking the therapist to watch one session.

Why does a sliding seat matter more than more resistance levels?

Because in the early months the resistance is going to sit at the bottom of the range whatever the machine offers, while the seat position is adjusted constantly as range of motion returns. A continuous slider locks anywhere on the rail, so the seat sits where your knee tolerates it. A bike with eight pre-drilled holes makes you pick the nearest one, and nobody publishes how far apart they are. Three bikes on this page publish a continuous slider with a stated leg-length range: the VANSWE RB405 at 29 to 40 in, the Sunny SF-RB420032 at 29.9 to 38.6 in, and the VANSWE RB661 at 29 to 37 in.

Recumbent or upright bike after a knee replacement?

The recumbent, for two reasons that have little to do with the knee joint itself. Getting on an upright means lifting the operated leg over a crossbar, which is the movement most likely to hurt and the one most likely to be restricted. And an upright asks you to support your own trunk and to stand on the pedals to get moving, which puts load through the knee at the exact moment you have least control. The pedal stroke itself is broadly similar on both.

How long should a session be at the start?

Ask the therapist, and expect the answer to be shorter than you want. The general pattern for returning to activity with a chronic condition, per the National Institute on Aging, is to build up slowly and judge by how you feel the following day rather than during the session. The specific mistake people make with a new knee is doing twenty good minutes on a good day and losing the next two to swelling. Add minutes before you add resistance.
