The Best Recumbent Bikes for Small Spaces

A recumbent bike is a long machine — the ones we list run from 50 inches to over five and a half feet. This page ranks them on the floor they take up, the room you need around them, and whether the box will get through your door.

By Stephen V.Last updated How we choose

How this is funded: we earn a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes what we recommend, and every page here names at least one thing we would not buy. Full disclosure.

Most people arrive at this page because of a room rather than a workout. There is a corner of a bedroom, an alcove beside a sofa, or a strip of floor at the end of a spare bed, and the question is not which bike is best in the abstract — it is which one will physically go there and still leave the room usable.

A recumbent is the longest of the seated cardio machines, because the pedals sit out in front of you rather than underneath. That layout is the entire reason to buy one, and it is also why it eats floor. The published lengths of the recumbent machines we cover run from 50 inches to 66.4 inches — a spread of more than a foot, on machines that look almost identical in a photograph. Published widths run from 20 inches to 32.7 inches, which is a bigger relative gap still.

Those two numbers are only the rectangle the frame stands on. Three other things decide whether a bike fits a small room, and none of them is on the spec sheet: the clear floor you need on the side you get on from, the route the box takes to get in there, and whether one person can shift the machine afterward. We work through all three below, with the measurements you can take yourself in about ten minutes.

Here is what the manufacturers do and do not tell you. Every machine on this page publishes a footprint. Exactly two publish an assembled weight, so for the rest, “can I move it on my own?” is unanswerable from the listing. Exactly one publishes the size of the carton it ships in. One publishes a noise figure, and it is a claim rather than a measurement. And not one publishes a step-over height, which is true across this entire category and not just this page.

They are ranked below by published footprint, smallest first, with the honest drawback of each one stated in its own card. The last entry is a machine we would not buy at any size, and the reason is its dimensions. We have not ridden any of these bikes — here is exactly what we did instead.

Quick picks

Ranked on the published accessibility measurements and on who each machine actually suits. Select a row to jump to the full write-up. The last column is the number of the nine measurements the manufacturer will not publish — we have not used any of these machines, and here is exactly what we did instead.

450 lb capacity with a continuously-sliding seat rail rather than pre-drilled holes, so leg length lands where it should instead of one notch short. The published 29–40 in leg-length range is the longest here.

What it gets right

  • 450 lb capacity on a commercial-grade steel frame, published
  • Infinite slider seat: adjusts continuously, not in notches — published 29–40 in leg length
  • 3.4 in seat cushion thickness is published, which is unusual and useful
  • Arrives 90% pre-assembled per the listing

What to know first

  • Only 8 resistance levels and an 11 lb flywheel — the lightest flywheel here
  • Step-over height, seat height and box weight are all unpublished
  • 'Whisper-quiet' is a marketing phrase, not a decibel figure

400 lb capacity and a 15 lb flywheel — the heaviest flywheel among the sub-$400 machines, which is what makes the pedal stroke even rather than lumpy at low resistance. Eight fixed seat positions rather than a continuous slider is the compromise.

What it gets right

  • 15 lb flywheel published — the heaviest in the budget-to-mid band here
  • 400 lb capacity
  • 16 levels on a mechanical knob, so nothing depends on the electronics working
  • Stated 90% pre-assembled

What to know first

  • Eight fixed seat positions, not a continuous slider — your leg length has to land near a hole
  • Only the maximum rider height (6 ft 3 in) is published, with no minimum inseam
  • Step-over height, seat height and noise all unpublished

A flip-away side lever clears the way when you get on, and at 63.8 lb assembled it is the lightest full-size bike here — which matters if it has to move between rooms. A published inseam minimum of 27.2 in, second only to the HARISON, suits a shorter rider.

What it gets right

  • Flip-able side handle gets out of the way for entry and exit, published
  • Published inseam minimum of 27.2 in — the second lowest of any bike we list, behind the HARISON
  • 63.8 lb assembled: the lightest full-size bike on this page, so relocating it is realistic
  • 16 resistance levels on a belt drive, plus two 20 lb bands for seated upper-body work

What to know first

  • 300 lb capacity, below the 400–450 lb machines here
  • Sunny publishes a 'step height' range for this model without defining what it measures, so we are not going to tell you what it means
  • Resistance bands need a pulley setup that some buyers will simply never use

The only bike here that publishes both a noise figure and a genuinely one-handed seat adjustment — you slide the seat with one hand from the seated position instead of bending down to a pull-pin. For a shared household or a weak grip, that combination is hard to beat.

What it gets right

  • One-hand sliding seat rail, published — no bending down and no two-handed pull-pin
  • 450 lb capacity, joint-highest in this shortlist
  • Publishes a noise figure (<15 dB), which nobody else here does
  • Published inseam 26.5–38.9 in reaches the shortest riders of any bike we list

What to know first

  • The <15 dB claim is unverified by any standard we can check — treat it as a claim, not a measurement
  • Step-over height and seat height are both unpublished
  • Assembly weight and box weight are not published anywhere we could find

380 lb capacity and a continuously-sliding seat for roughly the price of the cheapest step-through frames. If your budget stops around $200 but your weight or leg length rules out the entry-level machines, this is the one that still fits.

What it gets right

  • 380 lb capacity at the bottom of the price range
  • Continuous seat slider, published inseam 29–37 in
  • 16 resistance levels using ten magnets, against 8 on most machines at this price
  • Stated 70% pre-assembled with a claimed one-hour setup

What to know first

The only bike in this shortlist whose maker publishes an actual seat height — 20.9 to 22.4 inches, which is about dining-chair height, so you sit down onto it rather than lowering yourself into it. That one published number is why it leads.

What it gets right

  • Sunny publishes a real seat height range (20.9–22.4 in) — nobody else in this shortlist does
  • Published inseam range of 29.9–38.6 in is the widest seat travel here
  • Moving handlebars work with or independently of the pedals, so an arm-only session is possible on a bad-knee day
  • Pulse sensors sit on the stationary handlebars, within reach from the seated position

What to know first

  • 265 lb weight capacity is the lowest of any bike here — a hard stop for a lot of buyers

The listing describes a fully adjustable seat and an 8-level tension knob, and then stops. No published weight capacity, no seat height, no inseam range, and two contradictory sets of dimensions. We would spend the same money elsewhere.

Why we would skip it

We would skip this one. Not because it is a bad machine — we have no idea, and neither does anyone else who hasn't ridden it — but because Marcy publishes almost nothing about it. No weight capacity, no seat height, no inseam range, no step-over height, and the Amazon listing's two dimension fields contradict each other. For the same money the VANSWE RB661 publishes a capacity and a seat range. When a manufacturer won't tell you what a machine will hold, that is your answer.

What it gets right

  • Foam-covered handlebars and transport wheels are both published
  • LCD tracks speed, distance, time and calories

What to know first

  • No published weight capacity anywhere we could find — the single most-searched spec in this category
  • The Amazon listing's dimension field says 56 × 25 × 39 in while its own title says 11 × 22 × 31 in
  • Marcy's site has no live product page for this model that we could reach
  • Eight of the nine accessibility measurements are unpublished

We went looking for 70 measurements across the 7machines on this page — the nine that decide whether an older adult can get on, reach the controls, read the screen and hear themselves think. 37 of those 70 are not published by anybody. Not one manufacturer here publishes the full set.

Step-over height is the worst of them. It is the single measurement that decides whether you can get onto a machine at all, and across everything we checked, not one manufacturer states it. That is not an oversight in a category explicitly marketed to seniors, and the count in each panel above is there so you can see who is doing it.

Where a figure exists, we cite it and date it. Where it doesn’t, the panel says Not published by the manufacturer rather than an estimate dressed up as a fact. You can measure step-over height yourself in about a minute — and if a machine is already in your house, that is the fastest way to settle it.

Measure the room before you read the table

Four measurements settle this, and a tape measure and a roll of masking tape will get you all four. Do them before you compare bikes, because they turn a shortlist of seven into a shortlist of two or three very quickly.

1. Tape out the rectangle. Take the published length and width of a bike you are considering and lay it out on the actual floor in masking tape. A 50 × 20 in outline looks surprisingly small on paper and surprisingly large in a bedroom that already has a bed in it. Leave the tape down for a day and walk around it; you will learn more from that than from any comparison table, including ours.

2. Measure the side you will get on from. You do not step onto a recumbent from the front or the back. You stand alongside the seat, step through the open frame, and sit down sideways, which means you need clear standing room on one long side — not a wall, not the corner of a chest of drawers. Nobody publishes a required clearance, so measure yourself instead: stand beside a dining chair, sit down on it the way you would on the bike, and have someone measure the floor you actually used.

3. Measure the route in. The narrowest doorway, the turn at the top of the stairs, the gap between the banister and the wall. This is the measurement people skip, and it is the one that puts a boxed bike in a hallway for two weeks.

4. Decide whether it has to move. If the bike lives where it stands, assembled weight barely matters. If it has to be pushed against a wall between sessions so the room is a bedroom again, it matters more than everything else on this page — and only two of these machines publish the number.

Every published footprint, smallest first

These are the figures as published, in length × width × height. Where a listing contradicts itself we say so rather than picking the flattering number.

  • VANSWE RB405 — 50 × 20 × 44 in. The shortest and the narrowest published footprint on this site, and it still carries a published 450 lb capacity. If your constraint is width — an alcove, a gap beside a bed — nothing else here comes close to 20 inches.
  • Niceday RC88 — 50 × 23 × 45 in. The same 50-inch length, three inches wider, with a published 400 lb capacity and the heaviest flywheel in the budget-to-mid band.
  • Sunny Health & Fitness SF-RB424006 — 51.8 × 25.6 × 46.1 in. Under two inches longer than the RB405 and five and a half wider, but it is the only compact machine here that publishes what it weighs assembled: 63.8 lb, the lightest full-size bike we list.
  • HARISON HR-B51A — 54.6 × 25.7 × 46.2 in. Four and a half inches longer than the RB405, and the only bike on the site that publishes any noise figure at all.
  • VANSWE RB661 — listed as 20 × 45 × 40 in. Read that again: 20 long by 45 wide, which would be a bike you sit across rather than along. The length and width have almost certainly been transposed, and we report it exactly as published rather than quietly correcting a manufacturer’s spec sheet on their behalf.
  • Sunny SF-RB420032 — 63.8 × 26.4 × 49.6 in. Nearly fourteen inches longer than the RB405. It earns its place here for a different reason: it is the one machine that publishes its carton size, and the one machine that publishes a real seat height.
  • Marcy NS-716R — 56 × 25 × 39 in, or 11 × 22 × 31 in. Both figures come from the same Amazon listing: one from the dimensions field, the other from its own title. This is the skip, and the contradiction is why.

Three machines we cover are too big to belong on this page at all, and they are worth knowing as the boundary: the Teeter FreeStep at 59 × 32.7 × 54.8 in, the Horizon 5.0R at 66 × 25.2 × 52.2 in, and the Schwinn 290 at 66.4 × 28 × 47 in.

The dimension nobody publishes: the space around it

A machine’s footprint is the floor it stands on. It is not the floor it needs. Not one manufacturer in this category publishes a recommended clearance, so the rectangle in the table is a floor, not a ceiling, and planning a room to the inch off a published footprint is how a bike ends up somewhere you have to squeeze past it.

Our working figure across the site is roughly two feet of clear floor on the side you mount from. That is our estimate, not a manufacturer’s specification, and it is the kind of number worth checking against your own body rather than taking on trust.

The side clearance is the one that matters. Getting onto a recumbent is a sideways sit rather than a step-up, and the whole point of the step-through frame is that you swing nothing over anything — but you still need to stand beside the seat first. If a wall or a dresser is where you would put your feet, the frame’s open middle has bought you nothing.

Behind the machine you need less than people assume, and in front of it you need more: the pedals travel a circle out ahead of the seat, and your heels travel with them. Leave the outline taped on the floor and sit in a dining chair at the seat end with your legs out in front. Wherever your feet land at full extension, that floor has to be clear too.

One further gap worth naming, because it is the biggest one in this category: no maker publishes a step-over height — the height of the frame rail you cross to get in. In a tight room that number decides whether you can approach the bike from the only side that is clear. You can measure it yourself in about a minute on any machine you can get to in person, and if leg length rather than floor space is your real constraint, our shortlist for short riders ranks the same machines on published minimum inseam instead.

Getting it into the room is a separate problem

A bike that fits the corner does not necessarily fit the corridor. These machines arrive in one large, heavy carton, and the carton is a different shape from the bike.

Exactly one machine on this page publishes its box: the Sunny SF-RB420032, at 56.3 × 9.8 × 23.6 in and 91.3 lb shipping weight. That is a long, flat, narrow package rather than a bike shape, which is good news for a doorway and bad news for one person carrying it upstairs. The only other carton figure we have found anywhere in this category belongs to the Horizon 5.0R, at 66.5 × 11.2 × 31 in — five and a half feet long, and a machine we would not put on a small-space shortlist anyway.

For every other bike here, the box is unpublished, so measure your narrowest point and add margin. The turn at the top of a staircase is usually tighter than the doorway at the end of it.

Assembly is the second half of this. The RB405 and the RC88 both state 90% pre-assembled; the RB661 states 70% and around an hour. Those are the manufacturers’ own claims, not our timings, and none of them tells you the thing you want to know, which is whether one person can do it alone. Assume you will want a second pair of hands for lifting the frame out of the carton even where the assembly itself is light.

Once it is built, moving it is a question only two of these answer. Sunny publishes 63.8 lb assembled for the SF-RB424006 and 77.4 lb for the SF-RB420032. VANSWE, Niceday, HARISON and Marcy publish no assembled weight at all, which means a plan that depends on sliding the bike aside every evening is a plan built on a number nobody will give you. If that is your plan, the 63.8 lb machine is the only one on this page that has actually earned it.

And none of these bikes states a folding or folded dimension. Whatever the footprint is, treat it as permanent — the machines that genuinely put themselves away are a pedal exerciser or a walking pad, not a recumbent bike.

Quiet is a claim, not a measurement

Small space usually means shared space: a partner asleep down the hall, a television in the same room, a neighbor below. Every listing in this category knows it, which is why “whisper-quiet” appears on almost all of them.

One machine here publishes an actual figure. HARISON states under 15 dB for the HR-B51A’s magnetic resistance. We report it because it is published, and we flag it as a claim rather than a measurement, because no standard, no distance and no test condition is given with it. Every other bike on this page leaves the noise field blank and puts an adjective in the marketing copy instead.

The drive type is a better guide than the adjective, and four of the seven machines here document it. Magnetic resistance is in the product name on the Sunny SF-RB424006 and the Marcy NS-716R, HARISON’s own noise line attributes the figure to “the magnetic resistance,” and VANSWE states ten magnets on the RB661. In a magnetic system the magnets act on the flywheel without touching it, so nothing is pressed against a moving surface. That is worth more than an adjective, and where a listing states it, it is the one noise-related thing in this category you can check before you buy.

The other half of the noise question is not the machine at all — it is the floor. What travels to the apartment below is vibration through the structure, and that is worth solving under the machine rather than by shopping for a different one. The same argument applies to walking machines, at higher volume, and our apartment-noise guide works through it in more detail.

What the bigger machines buy, and whether you need it

It is worth knowing what you give up by ranking on floor space, because it is not nothing. The three machines that are too long for this page — the Teeter FreeStep, the Horizon 5.0R and the Schwinn 290 — carry the finest resistance control, the largest displays and the most substantial frames we cover, and the Horizon publishes an assembled weight of 123 lb precisely because there is more machine there.

The Teeter is the interesting case for a small room, because its problem is width rather than length: 32.7 inches, the widest thing we list, on a machine whose pedals travel a straight line rather than a circle. If a knee needs that stepping path, the extra seven inches of width over the mid-size bikes above is not a feature you can trade away, and the room has to accommodate it.

What none of the bigger machines buys you is better documentation of the things this page is about. They publish footprints, like everything else; they publish no step-over height, like everything else; and two of the three publish no carton size. Spending three times as much does not get you a spec sheet that answers the question “will this fit through my door.” The full argument for and against paying more is on our premium shortlist, and the same machines are ranked on value on the budget one.

If 50 inches is still too long

Fifty inches is the floor for this category. If the room genuinely cannot give up a rectangle that size plus standing room beside it, the honest answer is that a recumbent bike is the wrong machine — not that you should buy the smallest one and hope.

A pedal exerciser is the direct substitute: pedals on a weighted base that you use from a chair you already own, which means the machine stores in a closet and the chair goes back to being a chair. The training effect is smaller than a full bike and we say so plainly, but it is real, it costs a fraction as much, and the seat-fit problem disappears because you position the chair yourself.

An under-desk elliptical does the same job with a stepping motion rather than a circular one, and a walking pad is the one machine in this whole site that is designed to slide under furniture when you are done with it. All three keep you inside the CDC’s 150 minutes a week of moderate activity for adults 65 and over, which is the target that actually matters — the machine is only the delivery mechanism.

If you are furnishing a corner rather than buying a single machine, our small home gym guide lays out the whole setup — one cardio machine, a balance pad and a set of bands — in the space most people actually have.

Questions people ask

What is the smallest recumbent exercise bike?

Of the machines we cover, the VANSWE RB405, at a published 50 in long by 20 in wide by 44 in high. The Niceday RC88 matches it on length at 50 in but is three inches wider, and the Sunny SF-RB424006 is 51.8 by 25.6 in. Those are the three smallest published footprints on this site, and all three still publish a weight capacity of 300 lb or more.

How much space do you need for a recumbent bike?

More than the footprint, and no manufacturer publishes how much more. Start with the published rectangle — between 50 and 66 inches long for the machines we list — then add clear floor on one long side, because you get on by standing beside the seat and sitting down sideways. Add room in front of the pedals for your heels at full extension. Tape the outline on the floor and live with it for a day before you buy.

Will a recumbent bike fit in an apartment?

Usually yes, if you have a 50 by 20 inch patch of floor with standing room on one side. The harder questions are the route in and the neighbor below. Only one bike we cover publishes its carton size — the Sunny SF-RB420032, at 56.3 by 9.8 by 23.6 in — so for the rest, measure your narrowest doorway and the turn at the top of the stairs, and assume the box is longer than the assembled machine is tall.

Are recumbent bikes quiet enough for an upstairs apartment?

The documentation is thinner than the marketing. Four of the seven machines here document magnetic resistance, where the magnets act on the flywheel without touching it, so nothing is pressed against a moving surface. Only HARISON publishes a noise figure at all — under 15 dB, stated without a test standard or distance, which makes it a claim rather than a measurement. What reaches the apartment below is vibration through the floor, and dense rubber pads under the feet address that better than swapping machines.

Do recumbent bikes fold up for storage?

Not the ones we cover. No machine on this page publishes a folding mechanism or a folded dimension, so treat its footprint as permanent floor space. If the machine has to disappear between sessions, a pedal exerciser stores in a closet and a walking pad is designed to slide under furniture — a recumbent bike is not.

Can one person move a recumbent bike on their own?

For most of these, nobody will tell you. Only two publish an assembled weight: the Sunny SF-RB424006 at 63.8 lb and the Sunny SF-RB420032 at 77.4 lb. VANSWE, Niceday, HARISON and Marcy publish none, so a plan that depends on sliding the bike aside every evening rests on a number the manufacturer has withheld. If moving it is part of the plan, buy the machine that states its weight.

Is a smaller recumbent bike a worse bike?

Not on the specifications that matter to this buyer. The smallest machine here, the VANSWE RB405, publishes a 450 lb weight capacity — the joint-highest we list — and a continuously sliding seat rail. What you give up going small is generally at the top of the price ladder rather than the bottom of the size one: finer resistance control, a bigger display, a heavier frame. Those are worth paying for if you want them, but they are not what a 16-inch difference in length buys.
