The Best Exercise Bikes With No Subscription

If you have watched a treadmill or a rowing machine turn into a monthly bill, this is the page. What each console does with no account, no pairing and nothing to cancel — taken from what the makers publish.

By Stephen V.Last updated How we choose

How this is funded: we earn a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes what we recommend, and every page here names at least one thing we would not buy. Full disclosure.

The bike we would buy if a monthly bill is the thing you are trying to avoid is the Marcy NS-1201R, and the reason is what its listing does not have. No app, no Bluetooth, no heart-rate pairing — published as plainly as that. You get an eight-level tension knob, a display that counts the usual four things, a step-through frame Marcy states on its own page, a 300 lb capacity, and a seat lock the listing says you can work while you are still sitting on it. There is nothing to register, nothing to update and nothing that can stop working when a company changes its plans. For a reader who wants to buy a machine once, that is the whole brief.

It is worth saying up front that this fear is mostly misplaced in this category, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a page. Of the bikes in our registry, exactly one puts console features behind a paid subscription: the Schwinn 290, whose listing says several of the display’s more interesting features need a JRNY subscription. Every other machine we cover runs its resistance from a knob or a button on the console itself, and the app — where there is one — is an optional log, not a key. The subscription trap is real on connected treadmills and studio bikes. It has barely reached the recumbent aisle.

But “barely” is not “never”, and there is a second version of the question worth separating from the first. There is a difference between a bike that requires a subscription and a bike whose best features sit behind one. No machine here will refuse to turn its pedals until you pay. What can happen is that you pay premium money for a screen and then find the programs, the tracking or the guided sessions on that screen are the paid tier. That is the thing to check before you buy, and it is what this page ranks on.

So the axis is: what does the console do on its own, with the box opened and nothing else done? Where a maker publishes an answer, we use it. Where a maker says nothing about an app at all — which is most of them — we say that rather than reading it as a promise. Live prices sit in the buttons and come from the daily refresh; we have not ridden any of these bikes, and what we did instead is written down.

Quick picks

Ranked on the published accessibility measurements and on who each machine actually suits. Select a row to jump to the full write-up. The last column is the number of the nine measurements the manufacturer will not publish — we have not used any of these machines, and here is exactly what we did instead.

Marcy's live budget step-through, and the rare budget listing whose numbers agree with the maker's own page: both give 52.5 by 25 by 46.5 inches and both give 300 lb. The seat has a quick-release lock the listing says you can work while you are still sitting on it. What Marcy still will not publish is the step-over height, the seat height or the inseam range.

What it gets right

  • Marcy states the step-through outright on its own page: “Step through frame design for easier entry and exiting”
  • Quick-release seat lock the listing says can be adjusted while you are seated
  • Marcy's page and the Amazon listing publish the same 52.5 × 25 × 46.5 in and the same 300 lb — nothing to reconcile
  • Counterbalanced pedals with adjustable straps, so the pedal waits upright for your foot
  • Marcy publishes a 2-year limited warranty running from your delivery date

What to know first

  • Eight resistance levels on a manual magnetic mechanism, against 16 on bikes only a little dearer
  • No published step-over height, seat height or inseam range — the three measurements this site exists to report
  • No app, no Bluetooth, no heart-rate pairing. Simple to operate, but nothing logs itself
  • No box weight from either source, so you cannot plan for what arrives at the door

400 lb capacity and a 15 lb flywheel — the heaviest flywheel among the sub-$400 machines, which is what makes the pedal stroke even rather than lumpy at low resistance. Eight fixed seat positions rather than a continuous slider is the compromise.

What it gets right

  • 15 lb flywheel published — the heaviest in the budget-to-mid band here
  • 400 lb capacity
  • 16 levels on a mechanical knob, so nothing depends on the electronics working
  • Stated 90% pre-assembled

What to know first

  • Eight fixed seat positions, not a continuous slider — your leg length has to land near a hole
  • Only the maximum rider height (6 ft 3 in) is published, with no minimum inseam
  • Step-over height, seat height and noise all unpublished

380 lb capacity and a continuously-sliding seat for roughly the price of the cheapest step-through frames. If your budget stops around $200 but your weight or leg length rules out the entry-level machines, this is the one that still fits.

What it gets right

  • 380 lb capacity at the bottom of the price range
  • Continuous seat slider, published inseam 29–37 in
  • 16 resistance levels using ten magnets, against 8 on most machines at this price
  • Stated 70% pre-assembled with a claimed one-hour setup

The only machine here that publishes its console window in millimeters — 60 × 127 mm, about 2.4 by 5 inches of high-contrast LCD — and the only one with 0–100 electronically controlled resistance, so the step between the two lowest settings is genuinely small. Note that Horizon's own page and its Amazon listing disagree about the weight capacity.

What it gets right

  • 0–100 electronically controlled resistance: the smallest increments of any bike here
  • Publishes its console window size in millimeters (60 × 127 mm) — the closest thing to a readability spec anyone gives
  • Seat glides on an aluminum rail with lumbar support, and the step-through frame is stated as an accessibility feature
  • Publishes shipping dimensions as well as assembled — you can check it through your door

What to know first

  • Horizon's own page says 300 lb max user weight; the Amazon listing says 350 lb. We go with the manufacturer's figure and you should too
  • 123 lb assembled, the heaviest bike here — this is a two-person job to reposition
  • No published step-over height, seat height, pedal spacing or noise figure

A 7-inch display and 25 resistance levels from a brand with a real parts channel, and Schwinn publishes the numbers a buyer normally has to guess at — 330 lb capacity, 107.6 lb assembled, exact assembled dimensions. It is also the most expensive bike here by a wide margin, and it still won't tell you the step-over height.

What it gets right

  • 7 in LCD display — the largest screen on any bike in this shortlist
  • 25 magnetic resistance levels, so the gap between settings is small at the bottom of the range
  • Schwinn publishes assembled dimensions, assembled weight and capacity on its own site
  • Stationary handlebars are described specifically as aids for getting on and off

What to know first

  • Roughly three to five times the price of the budget machines here for the same seated motion
  • Several of the display's more interesting features need a JRNY subscription
  • No published step-over height, seat height, pedal spacing, box weight or noise figure

We have not used this machine. Everything above comes from the manufacturer’s published documentation and the dated retailer listing, with the source given for each figure. Where they don’t publish a number, we say so. We can’t tell you how it feels to ride, how quiet it really is, or how it holds up after two years — and anyone who tells you otherwise without owning one is guessing.

What we found looking for these numbers

We went looking for 50 measurements across the 5machines on this page — the nine that decide whether an older adult can get on, reach the controls, read the screen and hear themselves think. 25 of those 50 are not published by anybody. Not one manufacturer here publishes the full set.

Step-over height is the worst of them. It is the single measurement that decides whether you can get onto a machine at all, and across everything we checked, not one manufacturer states it. That is not an oversight in a category explicitly marketed to seniors, and the count in each panel above is there so you can see who is doing it.

Where a figure exists, we cite it and date it. Where it doesn’t, the panel says Not published by the manufacturer rather than an estimate dressed up as a fact. You can measure step-over height yourself in about a minute — and if a machine is already in your house, that is the fastest way to settle it.

What a subscription actually buys on an exercise bike

Three different things get called “the app”, and they are worth untangling before you decide what you are willing to pay for.

A log.The machine sends time, distance and an estimated calorie figure to your phone so you can see last Tuesday’s ride. This is what the Bluetooth on most mid-priced bikes does, and it is almost always free. The VANSWE cross-trainers and the Sunny machines in our registry publish app connectivity of this kind; nothing in their published specifications puts a fee on it.

Guided sessions.Somebody talks you through a workout, or the machine changes its own resistance to a programmed pattern. This is the tier that usually costs money, and it is what the Schwinn 290’s JRNY platform is selling. Whether it is worth it depends entirely on whether you want to be coached — some people genuinely do, and for them it is a reasonable purchase rather than a trap.

The machine’s own controls.Resistance, start, stop, the numbers on the console. On every bike we cover, these work with no account at all. The Horizon 5.0 R publishes its 0 to 100 resistance as working “at the touch of a button” on the console; the Niceday RC88, the VANSWE RB661 and the Marcy NS-1201R use a mechanical knob, which cannot be gated by anything because it is not electronic. If what you are afraid of is a bike that becomes useless when you stop paying, this is the paragraph that should settle it.

One genuine caveat about buying the simplest possible machine, since this page is recommending several of them: nothing logs itself. The Marcy NS-1201R’s listing is explicit that there is no pairing of any kind, which means your record of what you did is a pencil and a kitchen calendar. For a lot of readers that is a feature. If you know you are motivated by seeing a streak, be honest about it and buy a machine that will keep one for free.

The four we would buy, in order

The Marcy NS-1201R: nothing to log into. The clearest published answer in the category — no app, no Bluetooth, no heart-rate pairing — on a step-through frame Marcy states outright on its own site, with a 300 lb capacity and a quick-release seat lock the listing says is adjustable while seated. Marcy’s page and the Amazon listing agree on both the dimensions and the capacity, which is rarer at this price than it should be, and Marcy publishes a two-year limited warranty from your delivery date. What it will not tell you is the step-over height, the seat height or the inseam range. Our full NS-1201R review has the lot.

The Niceday RC88: mechanical, with nothing to fail.Sixteen resistance levels on a knob driven by ten magnets, a published 15 lb flywheel — the heaviest in its price band, which is what keeps the stroke even at low resistance — and a 400 lb capacity. Nothing about the resistance depends on the electronics working, let alone on an account. The compromise is the seat: eight fixed positions rather than a continuous slider, with no published minimum inseam. See the RC88 review.

The VANSWE RB661: best value with no app.A published 380 lb capacity and a continuously sliding seat across a published 29 to 37 inch inseam range, for roughly the price of the cheapest step-through frames, with sixteen knob positions rather than the eight most budget machines offer. Nothing in its published specification involves a phone. If the budget is the binding constraint as well as the subscription, this is the one — and our budget shortlist goes deeper into what money buys at this end.

The Horizon 5.0 R: premium with no paywall. This is the page’s most interesting entry, because it is the one that shows you do not have to accept a subscription to get a good console. Horizon publishes 0 to 100 electronically controlled resistance at the touch of a button — the finest workload steps of any machine we cover — and publishes its LCD window in millimeters, 60 by 127 mm, which is the closest thing to a readability specification anyone in this category gives. Nothing in Horizon’s published specification puts any of that behind an account. Two honest caveats, both published: Horizon’s own page says 300 lb maximum user weight where the Amazon listing says 350 lb — we take the manufacturer’s figure — and at 123 lb assembled it is the heaviest bike we cover, which makes repositioning it a two-person job.

The one to skip on this page's own terms

The Schwinn 290 is not a bad machine. It is on this page as the skip because of what this page is about: its listing states that several of the display’s more interesting features need a JRNY subscription, and it is the only bike in our registry where that is true.

It is worth being fair about what you would be giving up. Schwinn publishes a 7 inch LCD — the largest screen on any bike we cover — 25 magnetic resistance levels, a 330 lb capacity, 107.6 lb assembled and exact assembled dimensions, and it describes its stationary handlebars specifically as aids for getting on and off. That is a better-documented machine than most of the aisle, from a brand with a real parts channel, and the resistance works with no account. If you want a big screen and a brand with support behind it, and a monthly subscription does not bother you, buy it with our blessing — it appears on our premium shortlist for exactly those reasons.

But if you arrived at this page because you have been stung by a monthly bill before, then paying the most money on this list for a screen whose best parts are the paid tier is the specific thing you were trying to avoid. The Horizon 5.0 R costs less, publishes finer resistance control, and gates nothing. That is the comparison that matters here.

A last practical note on what to check on any bike we do not cover. Look for three things in the listing: whether resistance is changed on the machine or in an app; whether the console shows your numbers without a phone; and whether the words “free trial” appear anywhere. A free trial is a subscription with a delay built in. If all three check out, the bike is yours once you have paid for it — which is how it should be.

Questions people ask

Do exercise bikes require a subscription?

Almost never in the recumbent aisle, and that is worth knowing before you shop defensively. Of the bikes in our registry, exactly one — the Schwinn 290 — publishes that some console features need a paid app, in its case JRNY. Every other machine we cover changes resistance with a knob or a console button, and where there is an app it is an optional log rather than a key. No bike on this page will refuse to work if you never connect it to anything.

What is the best exercise bike with no monthly fee?

On published specifications, the Marcy NS-1201R, because its listing states there is no app, no Bluetooth and no heart-rate pairing at all — there is nothing to subscribe to. If you want a better console without a subscription, the Horizon 5.0 R publishes 0 to 100 electronically controlled resistance that works at the touch of a button on the machine itself, and nothing in its published specification sits behind an account. The Niceday RC88 and VANSWE RB661 are the mechanical-knob options at lower prices.

Will a bike stop working if I cancel the subscription?

Not on any machine we cover. The pedals, the resistance and the console's own readout are part of the bike, not part of the service. What you can lose by cancelling is the guided or coached layer — the programs, the structured sessions and the cloud tracking that a platform like JRNY provides. That is a real loss if you were using it, which is why it is better to decide up front whether you want to be coached than to discover the answer after you have bought the screen.

Is a bike with Bluetooth the same as a bike with a subscription?

No, and conflating the two leads people to buy a worse machine than they needed. Bluetooth on a mid-priced bike usually just sends time, distance and an estimated calorie figure to a free app so you can keep a log. Nothing in the published specifications of the Sunny and VANSWE machines we track puts a fee on that. The question to ask is not 'does it connect?' but 'does anything on the console stop working if I never connect it?'

What do I give up by buying the simplest console?

Record-keeping, mostly. A machine with no pairing of any kind — the Marcy NS-1201R is explicit about this — means nothing logs itself, so your history is whatever you write down. For plenty of readers that is a feature rather than a cost. If you know that seeing a streak is what keeps you going, buy a machine that will keep one for you without charging for it, which most of the mid-priced bikes here will.

Do I need an app to get a useful workout?

No. What makes a session count is the effort and the minutes, and the CDC's talk test gauges effort for free: at moderate intensity you can talk but not sing. The guideline to aim at is at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity for adults 65 and over, plus muscle-strengthening and balance work. A knob, a clock and a note on the calendar will get you there. Check with your doctor before starting something new.
